Anthropic Investors Bank Billions Before IPO

A look at the massive returns secured by venture capitalists and prominent backers at the AI lab's current private valuation.

The anticipated public listing of Anthropic promises to be a financial event of historic scale, yet the windfall for its backers has already begun to materialize in the private markets.

The timeline of the company’s growth reveals a staggering trajectory in value. In 2021, Eric Schmidt participated in the Series A round when the startup was valued at $461 million. By 2023, the valuation had surged to $5 billion, a period during which Spark Capital and Sound Ventures entered the cap table. The following year, the company reached a $183 billion valuation, attracting a significant late-stage investment from Iconiq. Early this year, the valuation climbed further to $380 billion, prompting a new entry from Sequoia. Most recently, the private market price settled at $965 billion, setting the stage for a potential IPO at a valuation as high as $2 trillion.

At this latest $965 billion mark, the stakes held by various investors translate into multi-billion dollar positions. Eric Schmidt’s early bet, made at the $461 million valuation, now represents approximately 1% of the company. This slice of equity is currently worth nearly $10 billion. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D and has poured over $1 billion into the firm over time, holds a stake now valued at $14 billion.

Later-stage entrants have also seen substantial gains despite their high entry points. Iconiq invested $6 billion when the company was worth $183 billion; that position is now appraised at $17 billion, with the potential to double upon a successful public listing. Sequoia’s $3 billion investment, made earlier this year at a $380 billion valuation, granted the firm about 1% ownership. This move has already more than doubled their initial capital, reflecting the rapid appreciation in the AI sector.

Smaller early bets have experienced even more dramatic multipliers. Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C when the valuation was just $5 billion. That modest sum has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a current value of $7 billion. Sound Ventures, co-founded by Guy Oseary and Ashton Kutcher, placed a $35 million bet in the same 2023 round. The firm subsequently added $400 million to its position. Although Kutcher departed this year to launch a new venture firm, the collective stake is now worth billions.

As Anthropic prepares for a public offering expected this year, these figures underscore the immense pressure and expectation placed on the company. Investors are not merely hoping for a standard IPO pop; they are looking to cash out positions that have already appreciated significantly in the private sphere. The gap between the current $965 billion private valuation and the $2 trillion IPO target remains a critical variable for these holders.

What happens next will determine whether these paper fortunes convert into liquid cash. The market’s reception of the IPO will hinge on whether the company can justify the jump to $2 trillion. For now, the numbers suggest that even before the bell rings, the financial rewards for those who backed Anthropic have been secured in spades, leaving little margin for error in its public debut.
