Federal agents arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney on October 5 for allegedly plotting to assassinate Representative Keith Self. The Republican lawmaker, who is currently campaigning for his third term in Texas’ third congressional district, confirmed the details to NBC 5. Self stated that the situation became serious enough to warrant an immediate increase in his personal security as early voting continues across the state.
The congressman’s team first learned of the detention through U.S. Capitol Police on October 6. Campaign officials said investigators believed the teen had been radicalized and was under federal monitoring. Authorities told the campaign that the suspect was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS. The target was specifically a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was expected to draw former Cowboys players and several high-profile guests.
Self described his response as measured, noting that his military background helped him stay calm. He explained that people without combat experience often panic when told someone is trying to kill them. However, he understood that the arrest had already occurred. His team focused on determining if the suspect was a lone wolf. Self noted that while he has received threats before, none had previously risen to the level of a federal arrest.
The congressman’s wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also understood the risks involved. She sent him off to combat zones several times and took the threat seriously. Self emphasized that the seriousness of this specific incident was different from past threats. He acknowledged that the event could have been a very serious incident based on the information provided to him.
Despite the alleged plot, Self attended the October 17 event as planned. He judged 19 different chilies and three pots of beans. The congressman reported that nothing happened during the gathering. He described the time as delightful and said the experience did not deter him from his duties. He continued poll greeting and meeting voters the morning after the news emerged.
Self stated that the incident will not stop him from alerting Americans to political ideologies he opposes. He said his team will continue to watch their surroundings while carrying out their normal activities. The arrest highlights the intense focus on the congressman’s stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding concurrent resolution denouncing Sharia law and affirming the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law.
The political context is further complicated by local events in McKinney. The city council unanimously approved a site plan for expansion at a local mosque in August. That vote followed hours of contentious public comment. It was later followed by an effort to recall several council members. Self’s opponent in the midterm election, Evan Hunt, condemned the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. The teen’s identity has not been publicly released as the investigation continues.
The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for more information but has not yet responded. The case remains active as federal agents continue to assess the threat level. Self’s campaign continues to operate with heightened situational awareness. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the personal risks involved in high-profile political races.
